Although there is an early dismissal this week the students will be working very hard. In course 2 we are on our final section of Chapter 7. Chapter 7 has been our longest and most intense chapter so far. All students should be looking over their quizzes and asking questions before the test on 1/31. ( We are even reviewing for 3 whole days before the test!)

Pre Algebra is going to cruise right through their chapter 7, Ratios and Rates. There is not a quiz or a test this week but I might be bringing back the homework check this Friday!

There will not be school on Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Course 2 students are really working at chapter 7. This is a difficult chapter in that it covers a lot of algebra and continues to build. Today (1/13) I handed back the first quiz of the chapter. We went over it in class but if your child is still struggling please have them re-read their notes or the textbook (sections 7.1/7.2) If this is still an issue I am available in the morning before school or during class to answer any questions or re-teach lessons.

We will be moving onto solving two step equations later on in the week and there will be a quiz on Friday 1/20.

The Pre-Algebra students will be excited to wrap up Chapter 6. The test will be on Wednesday 1/18 and then we are cruising into Chapter 7. I assigned the review from pg 334 for homework but if your child would like some more practice there is pg 331 as well as pg 744. They can come and get their answers checked on Tuesday morning.

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a great holiday break. The students were pretty sleepy today so hopefully everyone will go to bed early.

This week in Course 2 the students are starting chapter 7. Chapter starts with writing expressions and equations and we will continue until we are solving two step equations. This is on of the longest and more challenging chapters the Course 2 students will go through.

Pre Algebra students will be wrapping up chapter 6. They will be going through volume and surface area of three dimensional figures. There will be a quiz on Thursday.

What a nice and short week! The 7th grade students have their Constitution test on MONDAY!

In Course 2 the students will be starting their chapter on Integers.

In Pre-Algebra the students are starting their first geometry chapter. There will be extra practice on parallel lines available on Monday.

I am excited to be traveling with the 8th grade class to Washington D.C. this weekend. So far it looks like we will have nice weather. A big thank you to Mrs. Maass for planning such a wonderful trip and inviting me!

Next week all classes will be taking the Trimester 1 Test. This is a worksheet that has 25 problems covering all the concepts the students have learned so far. This is only going to be worth 25 points and we are doing a review the day before. There will not be any surprises.

Once the Trimester test is out of the way Course 2 students will be working with customary units and conversions. Pre-Algebra students will be starting chapter 5. Just a warning chapter 5 has a lot of vocabulary!

This is a busy week for the 7th graders.

In course 2 the students will be finishing up the chapter on fraction operations. They all really need to practice word problems. There will be a test on this on Thursday 11/10

In pre-algebra the students are working on their data project. They will have in class time on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The project is due at the end of class on Wednesday.

There is a Choir trip on Wednesday students will be leaving around lunchtime and missing their afternoon classes.

Pre Algebra students have quickly mastered chapter 4. They will be starting their project on Thursday of next week. Although in class time will be given they might need to do some things on their own outside of class.

This week is Red Ribbon Week. The students had an assembly today to kick off the week. The video presentation was very interesting and a great discussion topic with your child.

This week in Course 2 we are wrapping up Chapter 4. There will be a test on Wednesday!

In Pre-Algebra we are starting Chapter 4: Data. There will be a quiz on Thursday and a project at the end of the chapter.

The 7th grade students did an excellent job on their projects. They are graded and in the grade book as a Sunday at 3:30.

I am looking forward to parent teacher conferences this Thursday, it is always nice to touch base with parents face to face.

This week in Course 2 we are working on Chapter 4. Chapter 4 is just the beginning of fractions where we are focusing on Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple. The students will have a quiz on TUESDAY 10/18.

In Pre-Algebra we are just wrapping up chapter 3, Fractions. There will be a test on FRIDAY 10/21. Remember that there is extra practice in the book as well as in the back of my classroom. As always I am available at 7:20 to reteach concepts to my pre-algebra students.

This week is also Bus Safety week, Mr. Tom Tiede will be practicing evacuation drills with the students. Now is a good time to talk to your child about appropriate bus behavior so that everyone can remain safe!

I hope everyone has a wonderful 4 day weekend. This is a very exciting weekend for me, my sister is getting married!

When the students come back to school Wednesday 10/12 they have a short but busy week. Course 2 students will be turning in their "Are you an average 7th grader?" project at the start of classes on Wednesday. They have had a lot of in class time to work in it and everyone should be ready to turn it in. After that we will be starting Chapter 4. This week we will be looking into prime factorization and greatest common factor to prep for fractions.

Pre-Algebra students will have a quiz over fraction operations on Wednesday. I have made copies of extra practice problems to help them prepare for this. The sections covered will be 3-1 to 3-5. We will then move on to solving equations with rational numbers. The students are getting more practice with solving equations and hopefully by the end of this chapter they will all be pros at it!

I had a great time on Wednesday night watching the Spartans play on the DGS field. The team looked great unfortunately they did not win the big game.

Miss Coppeletta and the cheerleaders have worked very hard over the past few weeks and their routine looked amazing! I was there to see these girls try out and it is wonderful to see them come together as a team.

Are You An Average 7th Grader? The students in my course 2 class will be finding out this week. They will be working with the different types of data displays to create a poster or book. The students will be able to work with a partner or on their own and they will have plenty of time to work in class.
The final project is due Wednesday October 12th.

Pre-Algebra students are beginning chapter 3. This chapter deals more with fractions and decimals.

There are no tests or quizzes this week in math.

I have been able to grade most of the Course 2 Tests and the students are doing a fantastic job with Chapter 1. We will be able to cruise into chapter 2 starting on Monday.

In Pre-Algebra we are wrapping up chapter 1 and our chapter test will be on Wednesday 9/14. The students are working on Halloween Ordered Pair Pictures and I am excited to see the final presentations.

Here are some helpful hints to the Course 2 Perimeter and Area Worksheet:

Start with the back side- it is easier.

Find Perimeter first!

Use P= Add All Sides for perimeter not the formulas we used in class.

Remember when finding area break the shapes into different rectangles that you can work with.

Come in and ask questions Monday morning. I will be in early to help!

Welcome Back to the 2011-2012 school year!

Below is the letter I sent home to most of my classes last week.

Dear Parent, August 2011

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! I am very excited to be working with your child. My name is Annie Enzbigilis and this is my fifth year as the Lakeview 7th grade math teacher. I am a former student of Center Cass School District 66 and Downers Grove South. After I graduated high school I studied at the University of Iowa and earned my bachelor degree in mathematics. I still love to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes play football every fall! I recently earned my masters degree in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University. It is wonderful to be back at Lakeview and to once again be a Spartan.

I believe that this will be a very exciting and successful year for all of us. The key to this success is working together to ensure that your child has an excellent year. You can expect an email when test grades and/or effort in my class have gone above and beyond expectations. I am sure I will be in contact with all of you often!

In order to provide a positive learning environment for all students I do hold the expectation that all students will follow the rules in the student handbook. I also insist on creating a community of respect in my classroom. Any student who does not follow these rules may receive a warning, a change in seating, a detention, parental notification, and/or a referral to the office.

The grades in math are earned by the following items:

Homework: Homework will be given practically every night. Homework is needed to let the students practice the skills that they have learned. Since the students are just learning the concept 3 points will be given for completion, not for accuracy. All review homework will be graded for accuracy and the students will be notified of this when the assignment is given. Students must show their work for all assignments. All homework from a chapter must be turned in by the test day.

Quizzes/Tests: Quizzes will be given three to four times during a chapter with at least two days notice. The quizzes will be graded and handed back in a timely manner so that they may be used as a study guide for the test. Tests are given at the end of each chapter, usually about every three weeks. Each quiz and test is graded on a point system.

Projects: 7^th grade is a year for fun projects such as the scale drawing and the college cost projection project. The students will be given a grading rubric when assigned the project.

It is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed by an absence. Band students must tell me at the beginning of class when they have to leave for a lesson. The student must also notify the band director when there is a test of quiz.

Happy Memorial Day! I hope that everyone has a chance to relax and spend time with family and friends.

This is the end of the school year and the students are antsy to go outside and enjoy the weather. They will be having a test on Tuesday 3/31, the day we get back from the long weekend. This test is over surface area and volume of rectangular prisms and cylinders.

In Pre-Algebra we have been looking at probability and they will have a graded worksheet on either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

This week the course 2 students will be finishing up chapter 10. We have really cruised through this this chapter and will have a quest on Thursday.

This week in Pre-Algebra we will be working on graphing linear equations. The students will have a quest on Friday of this week!

The 2nd Annual Lakeview Career Fair is falling into place. The Career Fair will be help at Lakeview May 20th from about 7:45-9:30 in the morning. The students will be able to hear about 7 or 8 different presentations. We are still looking for parent volunteers, contact me if you have any questions.

The college cost projects were a major hit! They turned out really great and the students had fun doing them.

This week Course 2 will be starting chapter 10. This is a very quick chapter on geometric figures and we will wrap it up on May 5th.

In Pre-Algebra we will be diving into chapter 11. In chapter 11 the students will learn all the different ways to graph a line. This again is Algebra content and the students will be asked to step up to the challenge!

This is going to be a fantastic week! The students in all classes are working on their college cost project. Monday- We went to the IMC to pick out a college and figure out the tuition and cost for one year Tuesday- The students will start and finish their packet, a step by step process to figure out the cost until 2020. This week course 2 students will be learning about tip and tax. These are some fun lessons and I really enjoy sharing these lessons with them! There will be a chapter test on percents on Friday 4/15. There will be a chapter test on Friday as well.

Course 2 is wrapping up Chapter 8. I am very excited to see their scale drawing projects on Monday. Remember that there are points for neatness, creativity, labeling work, and the 12 problems. The students are then going to be working on percents, fractions and decimals. We we will briefly exploring the percent proportion before spring break.

It is great to be back at school after two snow days! I changed the quiz that was originally set for Thursday 2/3 to be a take home quiz. I told the students they are to work on it alone, no help from friends, siblings or parents. They are able to use their notes and a calculator.

The students have been working very hard on Chapter 6, they have learned all about integers and their operations. They have also learned properties and how to use them for different problems.

This week in Pre-Algebra we will be finishing up Chapter 6. The test will be on Friday 1/14. The students have been working with surface area and volume of three dimensional shapes. They will be given the formulas for their test.

Happy Holidays!

This is the last week before our holiday break and there are many things going on. Choir is having a field trip, cheer try outs, basketball games and scholastic bowl is moving to Thursday! We even have two choir/music shows we are lucky to watch next week!

In Course 2 we will be multiplying and dividing integers. On Thursday we will be working with all of the operations!

Pre-Algebra we will be exploring the Pythagorean Theorum and Circles.

There are no tests or quizzes in math next week!

November is flying by!

This week in Course 2 we will be following the order of operations with fractions. There will be a quiz on Wednesday covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions.

This week in Pre-Algebra we will be looking into the wonderful world of geometry. There will be many new and old vocabulary words that will be on the quiz on Friday.

The 7th graders will also go bowling on Tuesday!

This week we will be taking our Trimester 1 test on Monday. This is another way that I can assess the students to see how far they have come from the beginning of the year.

In Pre-Algebra the students are finishing up chapter 4 by working on a project. They will be surveying other 7th graders and creating their own data displays. This project is due on Wednesday 11/10.

We have just finished Chapter 2. The students did a great job on their test that they took on Friday. This week we are going to be starting Chapter 3: Data. I really enjoy this chapter because of all the real life examples I am able to use in class.

Course 2 will have a project in Chapter 3 we will be looking into it sometime the beginning of October.

Pre-Algebra is just wrapping up Chapter 2. We will be changing numbers into scientific notation this week and there will be a chapter 2 test on Friday.

September is really rushing by!

In Course 2 we are wrapping up chapter 2 and the test will be on Thursday. This was a quick chapter on decimals since the students have a lot of cross over in the science curriculum.

In Pre-Algebra we will be working on solving inequalities with integers. There is a Quiz on Tuesday then we will be looking at exponents and their properties.

This is a short week due to teacher's institute and the 7th graders even get to go golfing in gym class!

Well the first week was off to a great start! The students are getting settled into a routine and we are jumping right into chapter 1.

This week in Course 2 we will be focusing on chapter 1. The students will be working on variables and expressions as well as using the order of operations.

This is a very busy week for the students.
There will be a test for Course 2 on Tuesday.
The test for Pre-Algebra will be on Monday.

The students will be served their pancake breakfast on Wednesday before homebase. Remember this is a big thank you to all the students for raising so much money for Ride Janie Ride.

The students will also be having their field day on Friday. Keep your fingers crossed that there will be nice weather!!!

Well we are just wrapping up the last chapters in math class.

This week in Course 2 we will be starting and finishing parts of Chapter 12. We will be focusing on surface area and volume of solids. Since we are moving quickly I will be letting all students use a note card on the Chapter 12 test which will be next Tuesday (May 25th)

Pre-Algebra is finishing up their chapter on probability. There will be a test next Monday May 24th.

Ride Janie Ride

I am so proud of Lakeview this week. The students have been coming together to raise money for the Ride Janie Ride Foundation. The money raised directly benefits three amazing people who have cancer. There will be a small assembly on Monday for the foundation members and recipients to thank the students for their hard work and generosity!

I was fortunate enough to spend last Saturday with a fantastic group of students. I was a chaperon for Snowflake, Snowflake is a great experience for students to learn leadership skills as well as form close bonds with others.

Students from DGS and DGN, all dressed in their group colors, greeted us by singing and dancing in the gym. It was hard for students to shy away since it was so much fun. The high school students did a really nice job opening with icebreakers to make sure everyone was comfortable.

We were able to do team building activities directed by Eddie Slowikowski. He is a great motivational speaker as well as one awesome dancer!

My favorite part of the whole experience is giving warm fuzzies to students. A warm fuzzy is a piece of yarn given with a compliment or something positive. It really reminds me to give more compliments and encourage the positive behavior.

We really have a fantastic group of 7th graders and I am lucky to be their teacher!

This week as been very exciting!

Math Club had their last math competition last Saturday, I am proud of all of our students for trying their best!

Scholastic Bowl is off to a great start. We had our third competition and although we lost it was a very close game. Come see us compete this week either on Monday or on Thursday!

I am very pleased to be taking the Mimio class at Lakeview. Mrs. Kucera has been very patient in helping us explore the new technology. I have been able to create some lessons including a Chapter 8 review for Pre-Algebra!

This week in Course 2 we will focus on ISAT Prep. The students will be doing some extended responses as well as a cummulative review.

In Pre-Algebra we will have a Quiz on Tuesday! We have just started Chapter 8:Percents and this will be a VERY QUICK chapter!

I am really looking forward to Saturday because I am taking the Math Club to the Latin School of Chicago for their second math competition of the year. This is one of the largest competitions that we enter and it is a great opportunity for our students to display their mathematical talent!

This week course 2 will be starting Chapter 7. We focus on writing variable expressions and combining like terms.

Pre-Algebra will also be starting Chapter 7. They will be working with ratios rates and converting units.

Scholastic Bowl will be having their first weekly meeting this THURSDAY from 3:00 to 4:00. Scholastic Bowl allows students of all grade levels to participate in trivia games and compete in trivia competitions with neighboring schools. See me if you have any questions or would like to join!

This week the students will be taking the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. Be sure to go to bed early and eat a healthy breakfast!

The schedule will be a little disrupted due to testing so next week in Course 2 we will be spending all week playing review games for Friday's Chapter 6 Test. Chapter 6 covers operations with integers, properties, and graphing on the coordinate plane. It may be a good idea to make some flash cards to remember the following properties: commutative, associative, inverse, identity and distributive.

Next week in Pre-Algebra we will be having a quiz on Monday over surface area and volume. All students should have made a note card with the formulas on the. Then we will be reviewing for Friday's test on Chapter 6.

I cannot believe that this break is almost over! I am looking forward to hearing all the fun stories. I know that many of you are wishing that break was just a little longer but I can assure you that this week will be a fun one!

The students in Course 2 will be finishing up Chapter 6, working with integers. We might even play some battleship on the coordinate plane! Also there are no tests or quizzes in Course 2 this week!

The students and staff really had a fun time dressing up today!

Miss Payne and I even wore footie pajamas, they are very comfortable and warm in this cold weather!

This should be an easy two days for my classes.

On Monday in Course 2 we will be converting Customary units using fractions. It is a very useful lesson, especially since it is the season for baking and cooking! Tuesday will be a fun day since we have shortened periods, I am thinking we need to play some FRACTION BINGO!

On Monday in Pre-Algebra we will be looking at translations.

I cannot believe that September is almost over!

The magazine drive is underway and if we raise enough there will be the inflatable horse derby again this year! For those of you who do not know teachers will be racing across the gym on a giant inflatable horse. It is definitely a site to see!

This Monday Pre-Algebra will be taking their chapter 2 test. We will then be cruising through Chapter 3. Remember Fractions are your friends!

This week in Course 2 we will be focusing on data and the different ways that we can display it. The student's will be taking a brief survey on Tuesday after their quiz. College Cost Project Due Monday 5/11

This week in Pre-Algebra we will be working on Permutations and Combinations. There will also be a quiz on Monday 5/11 over the first three sections.

College Cost Project

COLLEGE COST PROJECT

The College Cost Project will be due in ALL CLASSES ( Math and Pre-Algebra) on MONDAY MAY 11th.

Students have been working on their cost projection worksheets and posters in class. The College Cost Project is a great way for students to see how much college will cost. On average college increases about 5% each year, this can be a scary number but I also take this time to explain different options such as scholarships, in state schools as well as financial aide.

This is a great conversation starter for your family. Ask your child what college they picked out and why? The answers may surprise you!

The Lakeview Swim Team will be having our first practice this MONDAY April 13th at DGS. I am really excited to be the coach this year! I am sure we will all have a great time.

SPRING BREAK

I hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing spring break!Many of you will not be leaving the state.. here are some ideas to keep boredom at bay:
1) Plan a sleepover with friends ( popcorn and movies, make-overs, video game tournaments)
2) Pretend that you are on vacation: drink Florida orange juice, watch a Disney movie, and try to get a tan outside ( wear sunscreen)
3) Plan a family outing to a museum, shopping in Chicago, sightseeing along the lake front, or just taking a walk.
4) Plant flowers
5) Start a neighborhood game, my favorites included ghost in the graveyard, tag, hide and go seek, and kick the can.
6) Read a book! ( or two)
7) Pick up a craft, try to knit, make jewelry or paint
8) Ride your bike, Rollerblade or just walk around the neighborhood.
9) Turn off the computer and talk with your friends face to face, it can be more fun!
10) Relax! Take a bubble bath, read a magazine and sleep in!

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!

We had our first fire drill of 2009. It was a bit chilly but actually it was very nice to be outside!

This weekend I am lucky to be part of Snowflake. Lakeview is getting together with Herrick Middle school on Saturday. Snowflake is based off of Snowball which is a high school organization that promotes self esteem, positive peer relationships, staying drug free and overall positive attitude. I was lucky enough to be a Snowball leader in high school and I am looking forward to helping out with Snowflake.

Happy Pi Day!! Saturday March 14th ( 3.14) is Pi day. Pi is the ratio of any circle's circumference to it's diameter. The cool thing about Pi is that it is a decimal that goes on forever and does not repeat. How many digits can you remember?

I hope everyone has a nice day off on Monday. Here is a little bit about Pulaski Day:

Sometimes called the "Father of American Cavalry," Casimir Pulaski was born March 4th, 1747, in Warka, Poland.He became a national Polish hero in 1771, when he and his army overwhelmingly defeated Russian forces in Czestochwa, Poland. Pulaski was wrongly accused in a plot to capture and kill the King of Poland and was banished from Poland.While in Paris, Casimir heard of the American Revolutionary War and the colonies' struggle to break free from England. He wrote Benjamin Franklin, who was in Paris, to ask if he would consider hiring him to fight against the British. After hearing of his reputation as a great leader, Franklin recommended him to General George Washington.Washington knew that the colonists had no trained cavalry, so he met with Pulaski and introduced him to LaFayette and John Hancock. In September 1777, Washington convinced Congress to give Pulaski temporary command of the small, new cavalry detachment. On the same day Pulaski saved military supplies and pushed back the British at the Battle of Brandywine. The next day he prevented a surprise attack at an area called Warren's Tavern. Congress acknowledged Pulaski's leadership and bravery and commissioned him as Brigadier General. He was placed in command of four light cavalry regiments.During the winter at Valley Forge in 1777-78, Pulaski wanted to train the cavalry properly, but was instructed by Congress to rest his men during the winter, as was customary at the time. Later in 1778, Pulaski became frustrated that his cavalry had not been involved in any important battles. Considering resignation, he asked Washington to allow him to start his own legion. He offered to recruit men, outfit them, and train them his own way. He would prepare this cavalry for active duty. After many letters from Pulaski, Congress finally agreed. With 68 horses and 200 foot soldiers, the Pulaski Legion would become the colonists' first true fully-trained cavalry.He recruited many men, European and some Americans. At first, some of the American soldiers did not like him because he did not speak English, but they soon began to respect him in battle for his courage and intelligence.During a battle in Savannah, Georgia, Casimir was wounded by a cannon. He died from complications of this wound. The first Monday in March has been designated Pulaski Day in Illinois. There is also Pulaski County honoring this great war hero. The Pulaski National Monument is located in Savannah.

In homebase we have been discussing acts of kindness. The students are filling out and displaying their random acts of kindness. Some of the students have really gone out of their way to be nice, some girls cleaned up trash around their neighborhood! The math club attended the Latin School Competition on Saturday. We all had a great time, even if we didn't place. A special thank you to the chaperons; Mr. and Mrs. Ohlander and Ms. Legan, it was nice of them to take the time on a Saturday to help us out!

This week in Course 2 we will be starting Chapter 7. Chapter 7 begins with writing expressions and equations. We will focus this week on using written models and combining like terms. There will be a quiz on Friday!

This week in Pre-Algebra we are finishing up Chapter 7 on ratios and proportions. We will be exploring scale drawings and models. There will be a project that will be due on 2/9 where the students will create scale drawings of their bedrooms.

Just a reminder to check Parent Connect for all grade updates. It is a good idea for both students and parents to have access. It is a good way to make sure that all homework assignments are turned in!

I cannot believe that January is almost over! This year is really flying by fast.

This week in Course 2:
Monday- We will be playing Battleship, it is a great way for the students to practice graphing their ordered pairs.
Tuesday-Thursday- We will be reviewing Chapter 6- Integers
Friday- Chapter 6 Test

Remember I will be giving a quiz on the Integer rules EVERYDAY this week!

Pre-Algebra- We just finished up Chapter 6. This may be a good time to discuss study habits with your child. Many students have not had to study in previous years and therefore do not have any study skills. A great way to study for my quizzes and tests is to try problems on your own. I always tell the students what is covered on the test/quiz as well as how many of each problem.

We have already started Chapter 7 and we will have our first quiz on Thursday!

Friday was a fun day at school. Students and teachers wore their pajamas, I am sure we all wish every day was PJ Day!

This Monday we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. In homebase we have been watching an Oprah special on his accomplishments. This is such an awesome time to reflect and have some great conversations with your children. Here are some quotes :

This week in Pre-Algebra we will be taking our Chapter 6 Test on Tuesday then starting Chapter 7: ratios and rates.

This week in Course 2 we will continue with our daily quizzes on Integer Rules as well as explore rational numbers and plotting points on the coordinate plane.

This week in Course 2 we focused on adding and subtracting integers. The students will be having a mini quiz everyday over the rules for adding and subtracting. There will also be a quiz on integer operations on Friday 1/16.

In Pre-Algebra we have been looking a volume and surface area of three dimensional figures. I will give the students a formula card for all quizzes and tests. There will be a quiz on volume and surface area next week Tuesday.

Iowa Tests will be next week. The students will be testing with their 4th hour classes. Remember some rooms are warmer/colder then others so you may want to bring a sweatshirt. Be sure to get plenty of rest and eat a healthy breakfast ( skip the candy bar and red bull) .
