Students must be fluent in their work with integers in order to be successful in this topic.

Happy Thanksgiving :)

Happy Thanksgiving! 
I am so thankful for the time I get to spend with my son this week, here he is giving his goofy smile :) 


This week the Course 2 students will be creating their own puzzle with fraction problems. They are spending Monday creating their own fraction problems and Tuesday creating the puzzle. 

When we get back from Thanksgiving break we will be focusing on rational numbers (fractions and decimals) with both positives and negatives. This is Topics 4 and 5 from Digits.

This week Course 3 students will be looking at what makes linear equations parallel or perpendicular. Tomorrow we will be beginning systems of equations which we will be continuing after Thanksgiving.

Week of 11/7-11/12


I am so excited to be working with the course 2 students on integers (whole numbers and their opposites). We will be exploring integers by talking about Soup. I tell them that there is a magical soup where they can add "hot cubes" or "cold cubes" they use actual pieces of paper to represent these and perform addition or subtraction problems. This allows students to visually see the meaning behind the integer rules and hopefully they will have a better time remembering the rules. 

We will be working on subtraction on Wednesday and Thursday and on Friday students will be doing a graded worksheet with both addition and subtraction. 

I realize that this is a long time to be doing addition and subtraction but students must master this concept in order to be successful in the future. 


In course 3 we are starting Topic 5 linear equations. Student will be exploring y=mx form and how that relates to a table, graph and word problem. This is important for future lessons such as systems of equations and many lessons they will do next year.

10/31 Happy Halloween

Course 3 Students are wrapping up a neat mini project. This is in place of a Topic 4 Test and has students exploring facts that interest them. They had to find 5 facts that contain really large numbers or very small numbers, create word problems and explore scientific notation in real world context.


Course 2 Students: TEST CORRECTIONS are due FRIDAY 11/4. Directions are on classroom and listed below.

You must do the following on a separate sheet of paper for each incorrect question or problem on the test:

  • Number the problem/question and rewrite it, you can skip any graphics; tables, drawings etc.
  • Write at least two complete sentences  explaining what your error was and what you need to do to correct it. Write enough to prove that you understand it now.
  • Show all work to correct the problem or question and include the right answer.
  • You must come and see me at least once to either ask a question or have a concept explained again. I must sign off on your sheet.

Welcome back to Mrs. Diver's Math Blog!

Hello Students and Parents!

 With the 2016-2017 school year a quarter of the way finished I thought I would try something different to reach out to both students and parents.

I will be posting on my blog each week to give a preview of next week's lessons, assessments and other important information.

Keep in mind that I do change lessons daily based on the needs of students so there will be a little flexibility in the preview. Example I might schedule a quiz for Wednesday but end up moving it to Thursday to give the students more time.


10/31-11/4

Happy Halloween!

Course 2: Students will be doing a fun graphing activity on Monday, they deserve a break for working so hard in my class.

We then we be starting Unit B Topic 4 Integers. Students will be spending all of next week adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers. I will be adding in decimals and fractions later, once they have total understanding of operations with integers numbers.


Course 3:
Students will be wrapping up Topic 4: Scientific Notation on Monday. The students will be working on a station activity where they will explore scientific notation used in the real world such as astronomy, bacteria, and distance.

We will then be starting Unit C (my personal favorite!) Topic 5. Topic 5 explores slope, linear equations, and creating lines. This topic is so very important in all of their future math classes so I will be making sure all students have mastered the content.

As always I am available to answer any questions, help with homework, clarify or re-teach lessons at 7:50 in the morning as well as study hall.

I wanted to let you all know what is covered on Wednesday's Test. Here is the breakdown, the numbers out front represent how many of the type of problem.

Course 2 Quest Unit 6

Here is a list of all the problem types on the Quest
6 problems- finding x. These will include vertical angles, right angles and straight angles.
3 problems- finding x degree in a triangle. Two angle measures will be given and they will have to find the third. b
3 problems- drawing the top, side and front view of a 3-D figure
1 problem- name the polyhedron, identify the bases, faces, edges and vertices
3 problems- identify the cross section
1 problem- name the angle (right, acute, or obtuse)
1 problem- complimentary or supplementary

November

November is off to a great start! I will be chaperoning the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip this weekend. This is a great trip for the students and teachers. I look forward to it every year.

That being said I am not sure if I will be able to grade the test that the students took today (Thursday) but I will have them done by Thursday of next week.

Course 2 is going to be beginning the wonderful world of percents. This is a good time to talk to your child about finding sale prices, tipping at restaurants and paying tax.

Course 3 will be continuing their exploration into transformations. Ask them to explain what they did/saw in the computer lab. We were able to use one of our new programs (Geometer's SketchPad) to explore transformations.

Unit test course 3

Course 3 will have their test on Tuesday
No calculator
Identify rational or irrational numbers (10 problems)
Example 0.4 is rational because it terminates. The square root of 3 is irrational because it does not terminate or repeat (2 problems)
Convert to a fraction 1.2 and 0.2 repeating - you must use algebra for the repeating decimal.
Convert 1/3 into a fraction using long division (2 problems)
Put a square root on a number line (2 problems)

Week of 9/16

In Course 2 students will be exploring the wonderful world of integers. We will be focusing this week on addition and subtraction. There will be a quiz next week.

In Course 3 we will be continuing our work with problem solving with exponents and scientific notation. There will be a quiz on Thursday. Below are the directions to help you prepare!

Week of September 9th

We are well into the swing of things now! This has been a great week in 7th grade with the math students learning how to change fractions to decimals using long division.

Next week the Course 2 students will be quickly going through the operations with fractions. There will be a graded worksheet assigned on Thursday.

Next week in Course 3 students will be exploring scientific notation.

WELCOME TO 7TH GRADE!

Welcome to 7th Grade!

I am looking forward to an exciting new year. This week we spent some time getting to know each other and going over the day to day rules.

I also had a lot of fun doing some mini mysteries with the students.

Here is an example of one:

Next week Course 2 students will be beginning Unit 0- Fractions. This is a quick unit to review all the wonderful fraction lessons taught last year.

In Course 3 students will be beginning Unit 1- Expressions and the number systems.

Pre Algebra Word Problems- Graded tomorrow-

1. An exam worth 145 points contains 50 questions. Some of the questions are worth two points and some are worth 5 points. How many two point questions are on the test? How many five point questions are on the test?

Write a linear system of equation that can be used to solve this problem then solve.

2. The Lakers scored a total of 80 points in a basketball game against the Bulls. The Lakers made a total of 37 two point and three point baskets. How many two point shots did the Lakers make? How many three point shots did the Lakers make?

Write a linear system of equations that can be used to solve this problem then solve.

3. DUE FRIDAY-
Create your own linear system word problem. You must also have solutions!

Pre Algebra Word Problem #2

The boys and girls soccer clubs are trying to raise money for new uniforms. The boys' soccer club is selling candy bars for $2 a piece and the girls' soccer club is selling candles for $4. They must raise more than $800.

Write an inequality to express the income from the two fundraisers.

The girls expect to sell at least 100 candles.

Write an inequality to represent this situation.

Graph both inequalities on a grid and shade the intersection

Give two possible solutions to this system. Justify your answer.

Miss Enzbigilis 5/24

Pre-Algebra students had to work on a word problem for homework.

Jason is buying wings and hot dogs for a party. One package of wings costs $7. Hot dogs cost $4 per pound. He must spend less than $40
Write an inequality to represent the cost of Jason's food for the party


Jason knows that he will be buying at least 5 pounds of hot dogs.
Write an inequality to represent the situation.


Graph both inequalities and shade the intersection. 
Then identify two solutions and justify your answers. 


Course 2 students have been doing a great job of working together in their groups. There has been some great conversation about surface area of prisms and surface area of cylinders.

Week of 5/6/2013

Course 2 students will be taking a chapter 10 test on Friday 5/10.
This test will only cover

  • 10.1 Angles
  • 10.2 Special Pairs of Angles (names and finding missing degrees) 
  • 10.3 Triangles (classify by angles and side lengths etc) 
  • 10.4 Polygons (names and formulas) 
  • 10.5 Similar and  Congruent polygons 
  • 10.6 Using proportions with similar polygon
This is a very heavy vocabulary section. Although there is not a part on the test strictly for vocabulary this is application of it. A good idea is to make note cards to help practice!!

Pre Algebra students will be taking a quest on Thursday 5/9
This Quest will cover 
  • table/graph
  • slope formula (finding a missing point)
  • slope intercept formula
  • point slope formula
  • x and y intercepts 
  • inequalities
  • a few word problems

Pre-Algebra Chapter 8 Test

Pre-Algebra will be taking the Chapter 8 Test tomorrow. This test will have the following:

  • 3 Questions on Fraction(ratio) to Percent to Decimal
  • 10 Questions that will be is/of = %/100 word problems
  • 3 Questions Percent increase or decrease (formula not given) 
  • 4 Questions over tax/commission/food bills etc
  • 1 Question over estimation
  • 2 Questions over Interest (formula not given) 
  • There will be one extra credit problem on the test as well

Week of 2/19

Course 2 students are finally wrapping up chapter 7. This has been the longest chapter for them and we have covered many topics that have been building upon each other. Tonight they will have to do the odds in a review packet. I recommend that if they have lower than a C in class that they should do the evens as well to help review for the test. 

Pre-Algebra students are cruising through chapter 8 percents. There will be a quiz tomorrow over converting fractions, decimals and percents as well as using is/of = %/100 to solve problems.
